First solo trip on the new yak. Got it Tuesday and took it from Simmons today. Foggy and cloudy but the afternoon got very nice.
I started just padlin around looking for activity, mullet jumpin, big pops and stuff. Had a nice low tide and started with the spook and had a few short strikes but no hook-ups.
Switched to gulp shad on white jig and did some more paddling. A few nice trout later the sun burned off the fog and I was able to see the bottom of the flat and was amazed at all the stuff you miss on a boat vs. a yak. I saw trout in the holes, redfish flashing and heard(but not see) snook pops! What a blast. I even followed a few bonnetheads around just to see if they even cared I was there...nope, they don't.
I explored a few areas on the flats, around sandbars, in the groves. Man I had fun. No motors, just me the fish and the water. I am hooked.
Almost forgot. This overslot snook ate my gulp and took me on a 5 minute yak ride!
She was a big girl. Now don't give me any junk about putting her in the yak for a pic as I do not have 3 hands...or a stakeout pole. I tried one in the water and had to chase the kayak down.
Anywho here is the water one:
I was pretty amazed once I realized my fist could fit in her mouth with room to spare and that my little 20lb leader held up.
I must say that this is only the 2nd time I have been pulled around by a fish. You know what I mean.
Hooked on the yakkin experience all the way around!

| Awesome Job Mike! Like the Yak! Like the Big snook! Gotta get mine soon...
I think every flats fisherman should experience Yak fishing, makes you realize to slow down and just fish. |

If you were fishing from a boat that fish would have been 6 inches longer.
I use fish like that for Grouper bait.

I couldnt post the REAL Grouper because the pics on the forum are limited. MY Grouper typically exceed teh bandwidth limitations. If you wanna go kingfishing we gotta go soon, they are gonna be goin south real quick the next big cold front we get!!!

You know what sounds about right? Using YOU for Grouper bait.
I'm gonna go kill a fish for no reason now, just because you dont like it. I don't hate fish....I LOVE them!!!! I love them fried, blackened, grilled, smoked, I love little ones with a hook in their face, getting eaten by bigger ones.....

Dale- I just got your message- and I forgot to call you back- but yes, I met up with Jim Plastic and he retrieved the trash can for the lucky recipient.

As far as me and Mike are concerned- anyone named Mike catches fish. That's what we do.

No really, just lucky. I was just sad the fish had a funk on his gill. I did keep her away from the dolphin that was jackin around, and I did get the remora off, thats gotta be worth sumthin?
