Can it be done? What Flies?....I got 300yards of fresh backing on my reel and I'm trying get use out of it. The fall kingfish run is heading this way, And I need some high energy, exciting video for a major project I got going on the side.....Rooster is bringing a COMPLETELY new image to the sport of fishing....old people will hate me (as most already do, lol!)...but I'm looking to get more of our FUTURE (youth/teens in particular) take a second look at fishing, instead of passing it up for something they shouldnt be doing...

Can it be done--YES! Try large white/silver deceivers with a 4" bite tippet. Better yet, tie on a long-shank hook.

Anchor and chum. Have a flat line out (very important) once they go off , tell your buddy to fight the fish and while he's fighting the king, cast out your fly in the slick and strip. The schoolies will behave like spanish macks, the school will come close than disappear again and again very quickly.

We caught several Kings today(12lbers) on the Fly. We used a white fly that had a head the shape of a Squid.I got them at Bill Jacksons. We also had some wire about 6 inches long that you can untwist and add your fly then re-twist it (a little plastic sheath then covers the haywire part),it was pretty cool. We went to a wreck in 60 ft, drifted over the main chunk and started to strip. Much more fun were the big Bones. They pull much harder, and the Cudas loved to eat em. We hooked a giant Cuda as he ate one of our Bonitas. He must of jumped 4 times before he bite threw the wire.

Yeah, That sounds like a blast, cudas are a blast on fly, I got a few flies tied and ready, but not sure when I'll get out to the big water next. Although, for now I'll be testing the flies I made for the king trip out on big snook, giant deceiver looking flies, however instead of using the feathers I used big rabbit strips. Wish I could post pics of them, but my camera took a swim

Rooster where do you usually fish?  There were some nice Kings busting schools of Threadfins about 100 yards off the beaches in North Pinellas on Friday.  I saw what had to have been a 30 pounder free jump about 40 feet from the boat while we were catching bait.

my stepdad usually takes me about 25 miles out to get grouper, thats all he wants to catch, he dont really try to target anything else really. convincing him to try new stuff is a tough game.

Where there are Grouper, there are Kingfish.  Toss a chum bag out the back of the boat, let it melt a little and the Kings will show up.  If you get a bunch of live thredfins or whitebait, use them to chum like you would for Snook in the mangroves.

When you see a king move thru the chum, toss out a few chummers and injure them a little so they flip around on top of the water.  When you see one get nailed by a King, toss a fly out there that looks like a greenback and they shoudl eat it. (I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about here, never fly-fished in my life)

You can both be bottom fishing and kingfishing at the same time.  I have never, and probably will never, troll for kingfish.  Waste of time and gas.  I just go to a good spot with hard bottom, a ledge, rock pile, whatever, and start bottom fishing.  I toss out a chum bag and two flat lines and keep on bottom fishing until one of those flat lines goes off.  You can probably do the same with your fly rod, just gotta get them to the boat first.  How much better can it be?  Don't go looking for the fish, bring the fish to you!!!!!!!!
