March 10, 2012
All the info is on the home page tournament links. The additional information that will come as the event gets closer is the full list of tournament sponsors and exciting updates.
The format is the same as the 2011 tournament with a Ladies and Fly division added. The other divisions are the "Open", "No Motor" and "Junior" (see link to official rules below, with info on each division)
Another fun twist: The bonus species is a $5 buy in. It is flounder. The largest flounder in each division takes the whole pool money (for pay in's in each division).

Prizes and Payouts
157 people fished the first event. It is fun with a chance to win. For those who have never fished a tournament before, we will help you with instruction and to answer your questions. The event honors Mel Berman, the founder of this site. A friend to strangers, admired by colleagues, missed but not forgotten. The event benefits charity and all other monies go back to the participating anglers. Test your skills against others? Sure. But everyone wins. This event was fun in February 2011 and the 2012 tournament will be even better. Neil Taylor capmel.com site administrator __________________ "Stay in touch with fish, I will. Four more new sponsors of the 2012 event:
Betts Fishing Center in Largo Tampa Fishing Outfitters (Tampa) Six Wave Lures (site member Glenn aka "Moondawg") and Kayracks.com
We are pleased to have the involvement of these new sponsors. It's entirely possible 100% of the first tournament will be involved again in 2012.
Flyers will be available for fishing clubs, tackle shops and on request for you to share in other places you would like to take them.

I was erroneously told that the old links would point to the same information. Not true. I will replace with the correct links to tournament information. Thanks for the post about it, I didn't test the old links. __________________ "Stay in touch with fish, I will. Drop them a line, I can. Yesss" |

Neil, Bring some flyers by Betts when you get an opportunity. The gift cards will be ready for you in late January. __________________ "Tact is for People who aren't Witty enough to be Sarcastic"

Any specific reason you have to be in Pinellas waters? The South Shore is my home and I wouldn't know where to start over there. __________________ Fish naked and show me your bobbers. |

There are two months and a week until tournament time. Prefish it, there is nothing against that. It is a tournament for charity and fun but it is unguided and I'd like to see it unassisted too.
I'm not veto'ing Tommy's offer, I'm just saying that I would like to mention that there are other people who have little experience in the same waters who won't have private input.
The limitation? In committee, and it was my idea and it was accepted, someone with enough time to fish another region and still make the drive to the weigh in, would change the contest.
It is a charity event and we rely heavily on the Honor system. The Pinellas County region is a lot of space to fish and no one is getting any advantage by getting into other areas and then hoofing it back. __________________ LivelyBaits~ Neil Taylor

I understand that. What if every year the tournament was held in a different region of Tampa Bay? __________________ Fish naked and show me your bobbers. |

If everyone is allowed to fish their home waters and get to the weigh-in, it will have a huge impact on the outcome, and level the playing field. I kinda see both sides, but If there are limitations then the tournament needs to be rotated all around the bay area so every year someone gets to fish their home waters and feel they have a shot to win. It makes no difference to me as I am not fishing it, but in the tournaments I do fish I travel and fish unfamiliar areas all the time, fishing is fishing, same patterns hold true over most of the west coast of Fl. I try to get some local intel before hand to save time in money in prefishing, I'd call Tommy since the offer is out there!! To the guys not fishng their home waters look at this as a chance to further deepen and develop you fishing skills and become a better fisherman, nothing is better than beating someone on their home field! __________________ Capt. It was last year that I thought I heard the reason for fishing in Pinellas County waters was because that was Capt. Mel's favorite waters to drift and fish for trout. I could be wrong. |
