Bad day at blackrock

Had the itch to go fishing yesterday. Weather was to be 15 mph NE. I new some places we caught snook last week. Figured we could get out of wind. The tides were to be out going most of day, didn't know they were going to suck all the water out of south shore. The plan was to put boat in at CRB and catch some bait, never have seen the tide so low, was about 2.5 feet in channel going out with a slight four foot chop in bay. Ducked in behind some islands in CRB, run a ground in spots my boat will go. Was able to catch about 3 or 4 dozen pin fish. Tryed a hole that is about five feet most of time, run a ground getting to it. Hole was about 2 feet deep. Caught a few small trout and released. Decided to get out of Dodge and pull boat up to launch at Little Manatee. Tide was still going out, mostly two foot water in channel, run a ground a few times going down to hwy 41 bridge. Tryed for some snapper or snook at railroad bridge, caught a few small snapper, tryed some spots that hold snook, problem was they were on the bank, tryed a few holes that hold fish, water very shallow and wind ripping 15 mph, caught a few dreaded cat fish, had one good snook bite, run a ground in a few more places.Decided to head home, tide and wind still ripping, run a ground a few more times, had problem getting back to dock and my boat will run in a foot of water, like i said, bad day at black rock, good day to stay home and watch tv.

Forum: Your Fishing Reports

Raymarine A50d or Lowrance HDS-5

Looking at getting a new bottom finder/chartplotter(gps) machine and just looking for opinions especially if you have one of theses machines or something in the same price range.

I know the Raymarine has the digital finder to seperate the clutter out but have read that it makes it less sensitive for picking up smaller stuff. Wondering if it might not show small bait schools.

Any help is appreciated thanks GEO

Forum: Angler's Forum

Joe and Tony tore the snook up with a redfish kicker

Well I got a call from Tony saying he wanted to go flats fishing. He was a little hesitant since the last two charters he took were not as good as he had hoped.I lot of moving around and not so much fish. He asked me how long I have been guiding and I told him 8 yrs and have been fishing the waters since I was 14yrs old. I told him not to worry that I would put him and Joe on the fish. The morning of the trip I hit the flats and the bait was thick with a mix on the sizes. A few throws of the net and I was loaded. I trolled around looking for schools of larger baits and found one and picked up some larger ones for the well. I picked up Tony and Joe and off we went to get on the snook. We get to the mangrove lined grass flat and the troller was deployed. Our first stop I went over some tips and the lines went out. fifteen minutes and Joe gets hooked up to a small snook and brings it to the boat and breaks the ice. 15 minutes later Tony get his first snook and everyone is on the boards. I tell them that as the current picks up the bite would also pick up. Boy did it pick up on the second half of their 4hr trip. We had double hookups and multiple hits around the boat the bite was on.A few healthy's had their way but some decent snook came to the boat. At the end of the trip the bite was still on and Tony latches on to a good one with the head coming just out of the water it was a beast. Then the drag starts screaming and pop the hook gets thrown. Tony looks like I feel. Trust me at this point I feel his pain and he says I can't end a great trip on that note. I said I totally understand so I kept them out another 30 minutes with more snook to the boat they were happy and we called it a day.
Tony and Joe ended the day with 20 Snook and two Redfish.

JOE

Tony

Forum: Your Fishing Reports

Beastly Sheeps w/ pics

Went out with my Dad today to do some Sheepin. We found them. Came home with 5 nice ones from about 16 inches to over 20 inches, the 20 incher was a BEAST! Probably weighed at least 6 lbs, maybe more. It was a beast of a Sheeps.

Bait of choice was shrimp. IF I felt frisky I would have dug up some crabs for bait, but I felt lazy, so I didnt. But we still got them Sheepies. Got some small drum, a few small Reds, and a 12 inch Snook (I use the term loosely) that spit my hook back at my face at about 90 mph. Little bastard.

If I stop feeling lazy soon I will put up a few pics.

Done being lazy. Here they are.

That sandal in the top right of the picture is mine, size 13 for reference.

Here is the 20 incher. This guy thought he was a Redfish, took 3 runs around the boat and was peeling drag like he had somewhere else to be. He ended up in the cooler and is going to be delicious. Doesnt really look as big in teh pic as he really has, it's hard to hold a fish and snap a pic with a cell phone.

Forum: Your Fishing Reports

Dolphin Population?

Ok So I read this a few minutes ago (http://www.mercurynews.com/bay-area-news/ci_13729901?source=rss) and was wondering how protected the local dolphins are - and if they are protected, are they over protected?

I know they are cute, personally I know they are plentiful, but given the lack of predators (humans) what is keeping the population under control?

Forum: Angler's Forum

Updates on my homemade skiff!

hey guys I know you need some entertainment so here you go. After beating the snot out of my boat in Captiva via trying to cross 3 foot breakers, running miles across a 1 foot chop, and being slammed into a barnicle covered dock in a wind storm overnight, the boat held up very well! Not a drop of water leaked into the boat and the livewell worked great, kept all my greenbacks alive and kicking even while cohabitating with the shrimp.
But during my adventures I knoticed I needed to correct a few things. First she needed some rod holders, so I'll be installing one in the front and one in the back for now. Next I needed an easier way to access the electronics so I purchased an inspection hatch just big enough to get my hand through. Finally, I needed to redo the hatches, something happened when I cut them out, they didn't retain the shape I wanted, so I'm giving it another shot

Shot of me water testing her on the first day.

cutting the hole for the front rod holder

front rod holder set in place

rear rod holder in place

hole cut for the inspection hatch

hatch set in place

cut out of the new hatch lid

I planned to put the hatches still fresh with glass down so they might hold their shape, here I laid down some wax paper so it won't stick

glass laid out about to be wetted out

panels wieghted so hopefully when they dry they will retain thier shape.

I'll be putting another coat of interlux brightside on later tonight, or tomorrow morning, this time I'll add some grip to it so we don't slide around when it gets a little wet. more updates to come.

Forum: Boats & Boating Forum

Lake Panasoffkee

Has anybody been doing any fishing there? I went by a few weeks ago and the water was very turbid. When is the best time of year for Bream and Specs? Are any areas of the lake better than others or is it better up the river? Haven't been in the freshwater in 20 years and have never been on this lake soooooooooo I thought I would take my new/very used pontoon boat there and try to catch some fish.
Sheepshead Fishing, These Fish Could Use A Dentist Part II

This is a short part two to the entry I posted yesterday. I just couldn't resist.

Sheepshead Fishing, These Fish Could Use A Dentist Part II

Last week I posted an entry about sheepshead fishing and their highly specialized teeth which are used to crush barnacles, mollusks, crabs, crustaceans and the like.

Well I thought you might like to get an close up sort of a dental x-ray view of a not so battle worn sheepshead sporting a full set of incisors and molars.

Like Ive said before in previous entries, these fish must surely be something out of a dental hygienists nightmare.

Although I have to admit, the above fish has teeth so white, it looks like it brushes, uses whitener, and maybe even flosses with shrimp antennae.
Forum: Your Fishing Reports
